Constancia, Shoreditch High St

Argentinian Steak Restaurant “Constancia” is Shoreditch Food Village’s newest pop-up resident – and it’s been welcomed with open arms. Constancia’s Bermondsey Restaurant has already been favourably reviewed in the Daily Telegraph, Evening Standard, Time Out and Square Meal – so its no wonder bringing Argentina’s renowned cuisine to Shoreditch will generate a bit of stir!

Set inside the trendy pebbled seating area of the Shoreditch Food Village, (it’s neighbour is Yalla Yalla) it’s uber cool spot for grabbing a quick bite and people watching. I met with Sebastien Harguindey, the Founder of Constancia, and spent a blissful thirty minutes chatting about Argentina, his move to London, the inspiring story of how Constancia began and the beginning of this new exciting chapter in Shoreditch.
Currently they’re set up with a modest table stall, though their proper vintage food truck “Chancha” is currently undergoing work (hopefully ready and set up before the summers end).

Sebastien is all too aware that fighting for a name in Shoreditch and trying to become established in an incredibly competitive market wont come easy, but there really was no other option as a location for this venture “Shoreditch is one of London’s most exciting and vibrant areas – these are key characteristics that we associate with Argentine cooking”.

I sampled the Steak Sandwich (£6.50) served with Rocket, Red Pepper and “Chimichurri” sauce, inside a fluffy soft Ciabatta. The steak was melt-in-the-mouth tender – truly living up the infamous reputation that Argentina is home to the best steak in the world. Sebastian told me their meat is from Angus/Hereford Cross breed, and attested the quality was due to the cows being fed in such a healthy environment with clean air, highly nutritious grass and a slightly lazy attitude!
The biggest surprise out of this was the zap on the end of the tongue from this cheeky Chimichurri! Finely chopped parsley, garlic, olive oil, oregano, white wine vinegar and additional tomato and red bell pepper make this one hell of an accompaniment to your average steak sarnie – forget reaching for the ketchup from now on. I’ve urged Sebastien to sell tubs of this sauce, I’ll be first in line if he does.

As if the allure of a steak sandwich wasn’t enough, mention the words Argentinian Steak and Chimichurri to me again and you’ll have me practically sprinting down Shoreditch High Street to sample another.

I’m sure Constancia will live up to the expectation, filling a gap not just in the hungry stomachs of Shoredites, but evidently a gap in the market of a very exciting food industry in London’s hipster East End.
